Alberta Health Optometry Changes

Earlier this month, Alberta Health released a bulletin that announced changes to optometric coverage for Albertans, effective February 1, 2025. They delisted a partial eye exam code, cut in half retinal imaging and photography codes, and removed the ability for optometrists to bill two codes in one day that could restrict completing an eye care appointment and treatment.

The Alberta Association of Optometrists (AAO) and more than 900 Doctors of Optometry were not consulted in this decision nor made aware of the changes prior to the announcement. Albertans were made aware of the changes when it was brought to light by optometry.

These changes are going to have a negative impact on your care. Your local optometrist and the AAO are dedicated to advocating for our patients and we are doing everything we can to ensure that the voices of our patients and members are represented and heard.

We are asking you to join us in letting your local MLA know about the importance of vision health by reaching out to your local MLA to voice your concerns and requesting them to stop the delisting and cuts. You can do this by phoning your MLA or emailing them at their constituency office.
